Talk to me about a foam roller

Posted on

Hey all. Just a quick one.

I keep seeing lots of stuff regarding foam rollers.

Can someone please offer some advice on a foam roller. I have the following questions

Why should I use one?

When should I use one?

How should I use one?

Which is the best one?

How do I fit it into my routine (do I use it on running days or rest days)?

All comments and advice as always will be appreciated.

Ps I had a great first work out with the weights. Didn’t feel too exhaustive but didn’t want to go crazy as I don’t know how I will feel tomorrow!

Thanks

RJ

My leggies are less sore the next day using a roller after running, i think. I don’t ‘fr’ everyday, mostly ’cause I’m lazy. Some folks roll diligently and swear by it. I like it for my IT band, hamstrings and low back. I kinda got on the band wagon with this one, tho. We already had one kicking around our house from a prior PT. The fr was retrieved from its closet space and now gets regular use cause it sits by the TV. Although, I do prefer an ice bath to a (slightly) painful fr. Good luck!

I have The Grid foam roller and use it as needed; I’ve heard The Stick roller is also great because you can roll out your muscles without getting on the floor to do it. Also a fan of the ice bath (or dip in the ocean) after a long run.

I have a 3 part foam roller. A large outer roller, a inner grid and a stick roller. I use the large roller for stretching out. This helps with stiffness because I have seen the last of my youthful muscles 🙂 I use the stick when I didn’t stretch out long enough after a run. It feels like a great massage! Do yo need one? not if you are a good stretcher or do yoga. Is it nice to have? Youbetcha!

Thanks for taking the time to read and post a comment.

I do no real stretching when I run pre or post. I have never really had a sports injury as a result. I asked as people say its really good for stiff muscles. I think I might get one for my non-training/weights days just to loosen off muscles.
